Square Enix has considered tapping Tomb Raider and Deus Ex developer Eidos to create an all-new Final Fantasy game, though no decisions were made. Speaking with OXM, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII gameplay director Yuji Abe said Square Enix is open to the belief, if the circumstances supported it.
“Obviously, Square Enix bought out Eidos various years ago, and we have direct access to American development teams,” Abe said. “That’s certainly been discussed inside the company, the opportunity of say, Eidos or perhaps another person to search after or even tackle the overall Fantasy series.”
“And we obviously haven’t decided anything concrete, but when we discover the perfect team of developers, the correct those who really desired to do it, and we had the proper game, then yes, certainly we’d give it some thought,” he continued.
Lightning Returns director Motomu Toriyama agreed.
“Everything in regards to the Final Fantasy series is that for each iteration, for each game we do, we’ve got an incredibly different game,” Toriyama said. “So the improvement team can also be different whenever, in order that there’s different ideas and different concepts driving it.”
“So obviously within that framework, having an extraordinarily different form of team could work,” he added. “So if we got the best team of folks, it may possibly produce something very interesting ultimately.”
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII could be released in February 2014 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
